Content provenance is information about where a digital item came from and what happened to it. It helps readers examine a record's history. A photograph's history and the truth of a claim attached to it are related questions, but they require different evidence.
C2PA Content Credentials can carry signed information about creation and editing. Validation concerns the integrity and trust relationships represented in that record; it is not a universal truth verdict. The C2PA explainer explicitly separates provenance from judging whether content is true. C2PA explainer, version 2.2.
Four questions about one image
Imagine a genuine photograph of a locked community hall. A post says the council has permanently closed it. We might ask whether the file has been altered, when it was made, what the photographer could see, and whether the claimed closure actually happened. A sound answer to the first question does not automatically answer the other three.
The photograph could have been taken on the hall's regular closed day. It could show the rear entrance while a meeting continued at the front. It could also document a real closure. None of these possibilities should be selected merely because it is convenient for the person sharing the image.
The exercise is not a reason to distrust every photograph. It helps identify the next piece of evidence: a dated notice, the opening schedule, an account from someone present, or a response from the responsible organization.
Missing history is a limit, too
The current C2PA FAQ explains that credential data can be separated from a file and that some methods can help rediscover it. Absence of a visible credential therefore does not by itself establish that an image was fabricated. Nor does the presence of a credential necessarily supply the complete history of every ingredient. C2PA FAQ.
For everyday reading, the useful habit is to state the claim narrowly: this check supports this part of the account, while these other parts remain unresolved. That habit gives genuine verification its proper value.
Read beyond the badge
The Evidence Was Perfect begins with authenticated recordings and an accusation. Its records and verification company are invented. The story asks what happens when confidence in the file becomes confidence in a conclusion no file could establish alone.
